It has been years since I have had a good Sticky Toffee Pudding.
Honestly I have only had it 3 times prior– once in Ireland, once in Scotland, once in New York City. Do you know how hard it is to find it in America? Yes, yes you can get it in a can from Heinz, but is that good sticky toffee pudding? I don’t know, I don’t think I have ever had it, unless it was served to me in one of these places. God forbid. But in just those three occasions it has become my favorite dessert. I don’t like toffee in general, so I probably never would have had it if I ordered it from a menu. But once, I was in a restaurant and I saw a server walk by with this beautiful shining pudding, plated on top of a pile of silken vanilla custard the smell was out of this world! I decided right then and there I wanted it! Sticky Toffee Pudding despite its name does not taste like toffee. It tastes almost like a spice cake, and since that first time I have been hooked.

As I have a sixth sense for finding anything Gelato related, my powers must be growing. I must have a sixth sense for all my foodie favorites. Lucky me. We arrived in St. Augustine and as we were driving up and down the side streets looking for parking, I suddenly screamed: “Sticky Toffee Pudding!” There it was written with magic marker on a white board outside The Prince Of Wales Restaurant . Again the Foodie Gods were smiling upon me.

I made everyone promise, no matter what happened that day, we were going there for Sticky Toffee Pudding and that was the end of it. So after a day wandering around the streets of St. Augustine and playing in the Surf at the beach, it was heading towards dinner time. I am happy that we decided just to head over to the Prince of Wales and have dinner and all.

The Prince of Wales is a totally renovated British Pub located in the heart of St. Augustine. Surrounded by Spanish, Seafood and Caribbean restaurants, it is a beacon decked out in English flags and shields. It is really the first English Pub I have seen since we moved to FL, which may not mean much except for the fact that in New England they are everywhere! The owners Tony and Sharon gutted the 155 year old landmark 2 years ago. Tony built the beautiful bar himself and the love of the cuisine of England is evident in the food.

As one must when you are deprived of an English pub for so long, one must eat Fish & Chips. For one who is planning to partake of Sticky Toffee Pudding at the end of the meal without exploding, one must have the BBC Sandwich Platter which is essentially the same thing but ½ the fish. But if you are a hungry Italian, meaning Roberto, you don’t care and you get the big one. They were amazing. Beer-battered, crispy and crunchy without being drenched in oil is what makes a perfect Fish & Chips. These were in that league: big, beautiful pieces of golden brown fried fish goodness. Served with equally golden brown chips (fries for you yanks).

Washed down with a Guinness on tap or a Strongbow Cider and you are good to go. I personally enjoyed every bite. But obviously saved a little space for my long sought after sweet treat.

Now don’t judge something by the way it looks. The Sticky Toffee Pudding was served, as all good Sticky Toffee Puddings should be, in a pool of warm liquid vanilla custard. It was sweet, dense, warm and delicious. And it was so big we had to take some home with us. Darn (*secretly smiling*)

We brought home some of our dinners as well and the next day we had it all over again and it was great!

If you want a British Pub of your own The Prince of Wales is up for sale. They have gotten so busy in such a short time that they are looking for a place a wee bit bigger to hold their expanding clientele comfortably. So when you go there, it may not be where this article tells you, but just ask the locals, I am sure they can lead you to it.
