Hey, Ray. Nice to hear from you! I'd love to hear more about your trip to Buenos Aires. How long were you there? Sounds like you are doing some fun traveling. Thanks for your input.

Jenn, I remember seeing the pictures of that apartment. It was so lovely and spacious.

Yes, and we rented an apartment in Rome as well - a two floor apartment that could sleep 6 - and because we went in March, which is not considered a peak season, we got it for a great deal - AND it was cheaper than a week at any hotel in the area (even at full high peak price). It was so much fun! We were able to have Roberto's family over for huge meals and visits - something that would not have been possible in a hotel.

I have had great experiences renting apartments in Buenos Aires. I saved money, had nicer accommodations, and felt less like a tourist.

That is true. When you travel has a lot to do with the rates too. Lots of good deals then. Thanks for your good tip, Happy Cook.

Michelle, I had heard about the hostels but thought that might be a little too risky. So do you think they are safe and fun for older folks? I should investigate that more as they would be the next layer of savings after the ones I talked about. To be honest I am not familiar with couchsurfing. Is that somehing like a house swap?

Thanks to both of you for giving so many more good options.

I've also had great success using hostels in South Africa and Italy. There are quite a few of them that don't have age limits and it's a great way to travel cheaply and get to meet lots of interesting people. Hostels.com has a lot of info and rankings. Another interesting thing I'd like to try sometime is couchsurfing. It's an organization you can join where you stay with a host when you travel internationally. You pay nothing or very little for accomodation, and get the chance to immerse yourself in the culture. Sounds like fun!
